An Acidic Lie
What the heck is going on?
Just a couple of days ago my friend Lisa asked me, “You hear about that girl who got acid thrown in her face in a store parking lot? The only thing that saved her from going blind is that she was wearing a pair of sunglasses she almost didn’t buy.”
“Really? Wow. That’s crazy.”
“That was God! She said some black woman with a cup came up to her and said, ‘Hey pretty girl, you wanna drink this?’ and then threw acid in her face.”
“Oh no! That is awful. Poor thing. I don’t understand how people could do something as vile as that. My mother helped a woman, Carol Guscott, who had acid thrown in her face when a man robbed her store in Jamaica. She’s permanently disfigured and she’s blind. It’s a good thing this other woman was wearing those glasses…it could have been so much worse.”
Today I read in the headlines that it’s a hoax. No. It’s not a hoax. It’s just a lie. There was no con, there was no trick – just a sad and stupid lie. But my point in writing about this is not about this mentally ill Washitonian woman. It’s about who she blamed it on. According to reports, she blamed the whole incident on a “black woman with a ponytail.” Really? Does the woman being black make her story more believable?
I have a theory. This woman has heard about an incident of acid throwing involving a black person previously, perhaps even Guscott’s story since it was widely publicized. She took that back story and shaped it into her own to promote her agenda. I suppose it made sense to her. If an incident like this could happen involving black people then it is feasible that a woman throwing acid in her face would or could be black.
She claims that she did this because she wanted to get her religious message out, but I'm guessing Jesus Christ doesn't approve of this message.
Of course, with the unfolding of this very expensive, narcissistic, indulgent incident, I can’t help but think of Susan Leigh Vaughn Smith. You remember her don’t you? The white North Carolinian who killed her two baby boys and blamed it on a “black carjacker” back in 1994, who is now serving life in prison.
I don’t want to think of these sick women as racists, but as demented storytellers using race as only a fabricated detail in their warped and twisted minds. I shouldn’t even be discussing Bethany Storro – the acid faced religious liar, but this issue was screaming at me and I felt the obligation to address it. Okay I’m done. She gets no more of my attention.
